A MetroCard must be purchased for access to a subway station platform. MetroCards can be purchased with cash from any subway station with a manned booth or at an ATM style vending machine located in nearly every subway station with a credit card.
MetroCard is accepted by all MTA New York City Transit trains which include subways and Staten Island Railway
Using your MetroCard is easy. At subway stations, all you have to do is swipe your card with the MetroCard name facing toward you and through when the turnstile screen says "GO."
To check how much time or money is left on your MetroCard, use a MetroCard Reader in any station. The reader also tells you the card's expiration date and how much money is left on it.
Note: Smoking is banned in all public places throughout the City, including buses, subways, taxis bars, and restaurants.
