Getting Around San Diego

Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) operates 94 fixed bus routes in the San Diego area with a fleet of 797 buses. Fixed route bus service include local, urban, express, premium express and rural routes.

MTS buses operates within the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, Coronado, El Cajon, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, National City, Lemon Grove, Poway and Santee, as well as the County of San Diego. MTS bus routes connect with North County Transit District (NCTD) bus and rail routes as well as the San Diego Trolley.

Riding the San Diego MTS Bus

Cash one-way fares allow a single ride on one Trolley line or one bus route (no transfers).
One-way fares on PRONTO include unlimited transfers for two hours.
Senior/Disabled/Medicare/Youth fares require valid identification.
Up to two children age 5 and under may ride free with a paying passenger on all MTS and NCTD routes.
Exact fare is required on buses. Driver cannot make change.

MTS Bus Fares:
All fixed-route buses accept PRONTO Cards, cash and tokens. MTS Access vehicles accept cash and paper tickets. Most buses have fareboxes and a PRONTO Card reader that validates pass products and can load a 1-Day Pass onto a PRONTO Card.

Fare Promotions
Family Weekends: On Saturdays and Sundays, up to two children (age 12 and under) may ride free with a fare-paying adult (age 18 or older) on all MTS routes.
Holiday Friends Ride Free: On New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, a friend may ride free with a fare-paying customer on all MTS routes.
Youth 18 and Under Ride Free: All riders 18 & under will be able to ride MTS and North County Transit District (NCTD) services for FREE with a Youth PRONTO app account, or a Youth PRONTO card.

Taking the Bus to/from the San Diego International Airport

From downtown San Diego going to San Diego Airport is as easy as boarding MTS Route 992, which stops at Terminals 1 and 2, and operates between 5:00 a.m. and midnight, every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and holidays.
