San Francisco is not what you will consider a big city. Located at the tip of the San Francisco peninsula and mostly surrounded by water, the whole city is only seven square miles.

Walking and the numerous public transits listed below is a great way to explore the city, because many of the city's most popular tourist destinations are within walking distance of one another.

San Francisco has an extensive public transit system. San Francisco Municipal (MUNI) operates buses, cable cars, light rail and the F-line heritage streetcar within the city limits and offer popular options for exploring the city.
